I’m moving to Berlin

Here we are. If you follow my social media accounts, there’s a high probability you caught that I was moving out of France for a while. Thing is : This is the last year of my Bachelor Degree and I’ve been asked to do an internship in a foreign country. After more than 120 spontaneous messages sent to numerous cities in Europe, I eventually got hired in a Public Relations firm in Berlin, Germany.

In less than 24 hours, I will be in a plane from Lyon, France to Berlin and although I still have no place to stay I am so excited to live this adventure. Five months away from where I was born, away from my friends and family in a country I don’t know a single thing about. To be honest I don’t even know how to speak german. I got hired based on my english and the fact that I’m a french native.

So, in order to make this journey memorable I also bought myself a brand new camera. Please welcome my Panasonic Lumix G7, its 14-42mm kit lens and its Canon 50mm f/1.8. You can expect a lot of stuff coming out from this object and I can’t wait to share this experience with you guys.

This is a short post and I’m sorry about that. You can also expect a data visualisation post of all the e-mails I sent, the percentage of answers I got etc. I noticed that there’s some countries who tend to not answer at all and other countries where people always take the time to answer even if it’s for a no. I think we can extract some interesting hypothesis out of my numerous batches of emails I sent.

Anyway, I’m probably already in Berlin by the time you read this so if you want to know what I am up to, please follow my social medias accounts. Most importants are my new Twitter account and my Instagram.

How did I bring 400 single readers in less than 24 hours from Reddit ?

Yes, I did it. I won’t show any screenshots of my Analytics account but I managed to bring four hundred single readers on my video games related blog due to one single article I posted on Reddit. This article will explain how I did this so you might be able to replicate the operation within your own niche.

Let’s start with the basics. I promoted my blog post on Reddit. If you don’t know about it, that’s basically a discussion website based on content rating. It’s like a big forum with a lot of sub-forum (we call them subreddit) in it, each dedicated to a specific subject. Tell yourself that there is a sub-reddit for everything : Technology, motorcycles, woodworking, a lot of pornographic stuff. There even used to be a child porn subreddit but it god banned (Obviously…). There is as much different subreddits than different users. So, onto the next thing.

As you may or may not know, I’ve got a Chromebook. It’s a cheap and lightweight laptop which can’t run any applications or games because of the proprietary operation system installed. Nonetheless, there’s still an active community which find ways to play on these deviced and I am one of them. I learned that a specific website developed a way to play indie games through your web browser. My Chromebook has a web-browser, and this website makes games playable through my web-browser so I can play games on my Chromebook, right ? Yes I can.

The thing is, there was no list of which games were compatible and no one wanted to go through the 240 pages and look for compatible games… So I decided to to this and make the list myself. After one hour of tedious work, I made a pretty table with all of the games’s names I could play on my Chromebook.

Then I published this list on my blog and linked to it on the specific chromebook related subreddit. The results were outstanding. I managed to get my post on the front page of the said subreddit (which means a lot of users certified the usefulness of my post) and since this is a community of dedicated users, they came massively to my website. I had over 400 single readers from all around the world coming and checking on the list I just made. People praised my work on Reddit and readers kept coming for 72 hours before my post got replaced by newers submissions.

What I learned is there’s always something your people are looking for that you can bring to them. If you feel like you’re a specialist among your niche, you can create content that no one ever did. It’s not easy, it’s not something you can make every day, but in the end you can win big and establish yourself as a true content creator.

Look for opportunities.

I just put two all-nighters in a row…

And I don’t feel as bad as I expected.

First things first : This is the first time I’m writing a decent sized blog post in english and like the title is saying : I did not sleep for more than 48 hours as of the moment I’m writing this. I still have to go through the day before having the possibility to sleep in a real bed so please be indulgent with my english. I hope I won’t give you any headache…

I chose to write this blog post because that’s a first for me and I wanted to share my experience. I used to do all nighters at least once every month since I graduated from high-school but this year is my last year and I tried to finish my projects in time and not rush them like I used to : the night before I’m supposed to turn it in.

What amazed me most is how accurate your memories of the last hours are. In my case, we are right now Tuesday noon and I’m awake since Sunday morning. And I’m just able to remember everything I did very precisely, without missing a thing.

You know that feeling when you start to mix memories of the last two days or when you can’t remember precisely what you did ? Well it just does not happen when you did two all nighters in a row. I know what happened Sunday, Sunday night, Monday, Monday night and Tuesday.

There’s an other thing which is quite mind-blowing when you think about it : Since Sunday, I spent time doing things most people spent sleeping. If we consider people sleep seven hours a night, I spent fourteen hours awake doing things, being productive while other people were doing “nothing”.

I know about studies saying that when you’re not sleeping, your productivity decreases exponentially. That’s probably true and I admit that like I’ll say in my next point : I feel slow. I can still do things but my reflexes and movements are slower. But I feel like my mind thinks properly. I’m debating right now with my classmates over a project of ours and I don’t feel like what I’m saying is complete utter crap.

An other thing which is kind of sketchy is how numb my body started to feel today. My mind can still be very focused although not for a very long time. On average, when I feel well rested I know that I can focus on a task for more time than I’m able right now. When I outlast that period of time I start to feel how long I take to answer and I need to do something less brain-intensive like just chatting or chilling on Reddit before getting back to those important tasks.

What else ? That was interesting to be honest. Showering myself three times without sleeping between them, taking three breakfasts, three lunches, three dinners, having a bonus in a game where if I og myself in each day I receive gifts, receiving three of these bonuses withtout sleeping between receiving each one of them. All of those little things which are kind of funny when you think about it.

And that wraps up my first blogpost in english and my “review” of doing two all nighters in a row 😀

Feel free to share your experiences in the comments section 🙂 I hope my english did not bother you, and I’ll see you next time.

Edit : It’s now Tuesday 7PM, still did not sleep but I feel better. I did read this post and there’s a lot of grammatical mistakes, I apologize for these. Consider my state while writing this post before being too harsch on me, I’m quite litterally falling asleep while standing still. Anyway, thanks for reading this ! See you later !
